George Lucas was inspired to create the character of Darth Vader upon meeting Kareem Abdul-Jabbar after a 1968 NCAA Tournament semi-final game in Los Angeles. In return, Lucas cast Abdul-Jabbar as an extra in the background of the original Mos Eisley cantina scene.
